Choosing the right rug size is one of the most important design decisions you can make for your space. A rug that’s too small can make a room feel disconnected, while the right size can instantly ground the furniture and bring the entire room together.

Below is a simple guide to help you choose the right rug size for each area of your home.

Living Room Rugs

For living rooms, bigger is almost always better.

  • Best option: All front legs of your furniture should sit on the rug

  • Minimum option: At least the front legs of sofas and chairs should touch the rug

  • Avoid rugs that float in the middle of the room without touching furniture

A properly sized rug helps define the seating area and makes the room feel intentional and balanced.

Dining Room Rugs

Dining room rugs should allow chairs to move freely.

  • Choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides

  • Chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out

  • Round tables pair well with round rugs, but rectangular rugs also work beautifully

This prevents chair legs from catching and keeps the dining area comfortable.

Bedroom Rugs

Bedroom rugs add warmth and comfort underfoot.

  • A large rug should extend beyond both sides and the foot of the bed

  • For king and queen beds, a larger area rug creates the most cohesive look

  • Alternatively, runners on each side of the bed can work in smaller rooms

The goal is to feel the rug when you step out of bed in the morning.

Hallways & Runners

Runners are perfect for hallways, entryways, and kitchens.

  • Leave a few inches of floor visible on each side

  • Avoid runners that are too short — longer creates a more elegant look

  • Use rug pads to keep runners secure in high-traffic areas

A Note on High-Traffic Areas

In busy spaces, consider:

  • Durable fibers

  • Lower pile heights

  • Professional cleaning to extend the life of your rug

Choosing the correct size helps reduce wear and keeps your rug looking its best over time.
